Smith College opened up the 2016-17 season on the road as the Pioneers posted an 84-56 win over Pine Manor College.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomores
Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) and
Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) each recorded a double-double. Guest-Pritchett poured in 18 points, 10 rebounds while Hanley added 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and pulled down 10 boards.

Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) contributed from all areas of the floor as the junior guard finished with 10 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and two steals.
- Senior guard
Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway) came off the bench to finish with 13 points, seven helpers and three boards.
PINE MANOR HIGHLIGHTS
- Shaneka Monroe led the way for the Gators with 18 points, inlcuding 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range.
- Shaquanda Middleton added 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pioneers took a 10-6 lead behind four points apiece from Guest-Pritchett and
Samantha Alakai (Pukalani, Hawaii/Punahou School).
- Smith was hot to start the second quarter as the Pioneers began on a 9-0 run to hold a 20-9 lead with 7:08 left before halftime.
- The Gators cut the lead to five (22-17) on a layup from Nyjahah Gibson but Smith used a 12-4 run to close out the quarter and go into halftime with a 34-21 lead.
- Smith began to pull away as
Emma Seymour (Seattle, Wash. /Roosevelt)'s layup gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the game up to that point, 65-38, late in the period.
- Sophomore
Sydney Koh (Seattle, Wash. /Lakeside)'s trey pushed Smith's lead to 30 points midway through the fourth quarter as the Pioneers went on for the win.
TURNING POINT
Smith used a 54-31 run over the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
For the game, Smith shot 42.3 percent from the field, 68.4 percent from the free throw line and forced 22 Pine Manor turnovers. In addition, the Pioneers held a commanding 59-41 advantage on the boards.

The Pioneers host the 24th Annual Tyler Tip-Off Tournament this weekend beginning with a 2:00 p.m. matchup against Daniel Webster on Saturday.
