The Smith College basketall team cruised past Daniel Webster 81-21 in the opening game of the 24th Annual Tyler Tip-Off Tournament.Â
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior guard Tavorsia Talley (New Hope, Pa./Solebury School) and senior guard Jade Chihara (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) each provided a spark off the bench as the duo combined for 26 points. Talley finished with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting while Chihara added 12 points and seven rebounds.
- Sophomore forward Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) pulled down eight boards to go along with a game high 14 points.
- Junior Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) was the final Smith player to finish in double figures as the guard connected on 5-of-8 shooting for 11 points.
- Senior guard Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway) dished out a game best six assists.
DANIEL WEBSTER HIGHLIGHTS
- Kayla Free led the way for the Eagles with seven points and six rebounds.
- Briana Diggs added six points and a team-high eight boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pioneers went on a 7-0 run late in the first quarter to take a 19-5 lead behind five points from sophomore guard Sydney Koh (Seattle, Wash. /Lakeside).
- A trey from sophomore Katy McClellan (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) gave Smith their largest lead, 33-7, with 4:46 left in the second quarter. The Pioneers went into halftime leading 37-11.
- The Eagles went scoreless over a 6:04 period in the third quarter that allowed Smith to pull away.
- Guest-Pritcett scored six consecutive points for the home team late in the fourth as the Pioneers were able to run in transition on the Eagles
- Castro gave the Pioneers their largest lead with 1:31 remaining to set the final score.Â
TURNING POINT
Smith had another strong showing in the third quarter as the home team outscored their opponent 26-5 to open the second half.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- For the game, Smith shot 46.5 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from behind-the-arc and forced 26 Daniel Webster turnovers. In addition, the Pioneers owned the glass, outrebounding their opponent 55-25.
- Smith won their home opener for the third consecutive season.Â
