THE SERIES
The game marks the 3rd all-time meeting between the two programs, dating back to the first contest in 1985 - a 63-50 Pine Manor victory.
LAST MEETING
Pine Manor came away with a 74-54 win on January 25, 1986.
SCOUTING THE GATORS
The Alycia Gervais era officially kicks off tonight as the Pine Manor women's basketball team opens the 2016-17 season against Smith. Gervais, who was announced as the new head coach in June, will begin her inaugural season with a roster featuring just one senior and one freshman. The Gators are coming off a 13-14 season a year ago which saw Pine Manor reach the semifinals of the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC). Despite losing their top-two scorers from a year ago, the Gators return junior guard Shaquanda Middleton (5.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg), sophomore center Taylor Martin (7.2 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and junior forward Erica Jones (11.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg).
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Smith aims to win their season opener for the third consecutive season tonight against Pine Manor. With no newcomers to the roster, the Pioneers will rely on a balanced team of upperclassmen and underclassmen. Senior captains
Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway) and
Jade Chihara (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) will provide leadership and experience in the back court to go along with sophomore forward
Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) (12.4 ppg/9.3 rpg) who was a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Second Team selection last season. Juniors
Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) (7.4 ppg/3.2 rpg) and
Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) (6.7 ppg/2.2 apg) will be counted on for scoring at the guard position while 2014-15 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year
Samantha Alakai (Pukalani, Hawaii/Punahou School) (6.6 ppg/3.6 rpg) is a threat from down low and behind-the-arc. Junior forward
Amanda Barriscale (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) (4.0 ppg/5.7 rpg) will provide aggressive defense for the Pioneers and sophomore forward
Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) (6.7 ppg/3.9 rpg) will be a key role player off the bench for Smith. The Pioneers went 11-15 a year ago.
