The Smith College basketball team captured the 2016 Tyler Tip-Off Tournament crown as the Pioneers defeated Colby-Sawyer 53-36 Sunday afternoon inside Ainsworth Gymnasium. Sophomore forward
Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) and junior guard
Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) were named to the All-Tournament Team.Â
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Guest-Pritchett finished with a season-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, five of which were on the offensive end.Â
- Marquez was just shy of a double-double as she recorded nine points, three steals, hauled in nine rebounds and dished out three assists.
- Sophomore forward Emma Seymour (Seattle, Wash. /Roosevelt) posted a career-high eight points while sophomore guard Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) totaled seven points and three boards.
COLBY-SAWYER HIGHLIGHTS
- Freshmant Tianna Sugars recorded a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds in 19 minutes of work and was named to the All-Tournament Team.Â
- Senior guard Lexi Iannone added 10 points, five rebounds and one steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Guest-Pritchett's layup at the 6:08 mark forced a Charger timeout as the Pioneers held their largest lead of the 1st quarter, 8-3.
- Colby-Sawyer responded on a quick 5-0 run to tie the game as the teams ended the quarter with Smith ahead 11-10.
- Seymour stole the show to start the second quarter as the sophomore rattled off six consecutive points to give the home team a 17-10 advantage with 7:50 on the clock.Â
- AÂ spectacular layup from Hanley extended the Pioneers' lead to 11 (24-13).
- For the third consecutive game, Smith came out of the half on a high note as the Pioneers started on a 7-0 run to lead by 16 midway through the third quarter.Â
- Colby-Sawyer made things interesting as the Chargers cut the lead to seven on a pair of free throws from Iannone to end the quarter.Â
- Junior guard Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) nailed a trey as the Pioneers eventually put the game out of reach.
TURNING POINT
- The Pioneers outscored Colby-Sawyer 15-5 in the fourth quarter.Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- For the game, Smith shot 38.6 percent from the field, 58.3 percent from the charity stripe and forced 28 Colby-Sawyer turnovers. In addition, the Pioneers held a slight rebounding edge, 38-35.
- Smith begins the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign when they started 6-0.
