HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded three-pointers to open the game, as a layup from Maura Buckley gave the visitors their largest lead of the quarter, 13-6, with 1:01 on the clock. A layup from Hanley with under a minute in the first brought the Pioneers within five, 13-8, to finish the opening period.
  • Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory)'s three got the Pioneers within four (17-13) at the 7:11 mark but the Engineers would extend the lead to as much as eight multiple times in the quarter. Tavorsia Talley (New Hope, Pa./Solebury School)'s jumper with 2:51on the clock ended the scoring for both teams as the visitors went into the break ahead 25-19.
  • WPI began the second half with back-to-back treys from Dunphy and Rogers for a 12-point lead which was answered by back-to-back buckets from Hanley and Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) of the Pioneers.
  • A three-point play from junior guard Samantha Alakai (Pukalani, Hawaii/Punahou School) kept Smith in the game late in the third quarter and Castro added a free throw as the Pioneers trailed 42-38 going into the fourth quarter.
  • The lead for WPI grew to as many as six points but Koh's clutch three-pointer at the 2:36 mark made it a 48-45 game.
  • The Pioneers came to within 48-47 on free throws from Hanley but a trey from Rogers was the nail in the coffin for Smith as the Engineers converted free throws down the stretch for the 57-50 final.
