THE SERIES
The game marks the 25th all-time meeting between the two programs, dating back to the first contest in 1974 - a 46-25 Smith victory. The Owls lead the series 13-11.
LAST MEETING
The Pioneers reached their season-high in points and first year guard
Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) scored 17 points as Smith bested Westfield State 97-74 on December 12, 2015. The Pioneers had their best shooting day of the season, connecting on 54.4 percent (31-57) from the field and 50.0 percent (7-14) from 3-point range, while also controlling the boards 52-36.
LAST WESTFIELD WIN
Westfield State held Smith scoreless in the final 2:05 in a 73-68 win in non-conference women's basketball action on December 10, 2013.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
Westfield State enters Saturday's non-conference game at 4-3 after a 97-93 overtime loss to Western New England. In that game, senior guard Jill Valley led the Owls with 24 points and five steals. The Owls return the league's defending player of the year in Valley who averaged 17.1 points per game, 3.6 steals per game, shot 42 percent from three-point range and 85 percent from the free throw line. Westfield finished the 2015-16 season with a 20-8 overall record and an 11-1 mark in the MASCAC. The Owls made their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in coach Andrea Bertini's tenure and were picked to repeat as conference champions this season. Valley leads the MASCAC in points per game (24.9) and ranks third in field goal percentage (53.4) while sophomore guard Allison Hester averages 10.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. WSU averages 85.1 points per contest.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Smith (4-3) looks to snap a two game losing streak Saturday after their 57-50 loss to WPI. In that game, sophomore guard
Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) recorded a team-high nine points and
recorded four rebounds while junior guard
Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) and
Sydney Koh (Seattle, Wash. /Lakeside) came off the bench to combine for 13 points. Sophomore forward
Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) ranks in the top-8 of the NEWMAC in points per game (12.9) and rebounds per game (8.9). Hanley is averaging 10.9 points, 6.0 rebounds per game while Castro leads the team with 3.4 assists per contest. The Pioneers have the league's fifth-highest scoring offense averaging 64.3 points per game while the defense allows 48.7 points per contest. Smith was selected to finish fifth in the NEWMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
