Pioneers Hold On For 8-4 Win Over Nichols In Home Opener

March 22, 2016

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College women's lacrosse team scored six first half goals on the way to an 8-4 victory over Nichols College Tuesday evening non-conference lacrosse action.

Senior Ray Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) finished with three goals for the Pioneers, while sophomores Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) added two goals each. Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) produced one goal, one assist, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Nichols (2-3) was led by Kirsten Sullivan who netted two goals.

The Pioneers (3-3) wasted no time as Silveria and Myran scored in the opening five minutes of the half. A few minutes later, Hamilton and Harris joined the action, scoring back-to-back giving Smith the 4-0 advantage with 22:44 remaining in the opening period.

Myran added her second goal of the half before Kirsten Sullivan took advantage of a yellow card on Smith to score the man up goal. Sullivan found the back of the net again at the 7:47 mark to make it a 5-2 affair.

Silveria gave the Pioneers some breathing room with 2:12 on the clock as Smith headed into the break leading 6-2.

The Bison defense held Smith scoreless until Silveria cradled a Hamilton pass to give the home team a 7-3 lead with 6:54 to play. Nichols quickly responded when Alexa Smith found the back of the net but Smith's controlled possesion on the ensuing draw control put away any hopes of a comeback. Hamilton added a goal with 10 seconds left on the clock for the 8-4 final score.

Smith finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots on goal as Pioneers goalkeer Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) recorded three saves. Bison netminder Katherine Cotton stopped 12 on the other end.

Smith hosts Johnson State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., while Nichols welcomes Westfield State Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
