Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Senior attack Brooke Sabol recorded a game-best six points on four goals, two assists to lead Wheaton College to a 16-6 win over Smith College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Lyons move to 4-5 on the season, while the Pioneers are now 4-4 overall.
Sabol added five ground balls and four draw control wins, while classmates Jenna Tewksbury and Katie Peters each found the back of the net four times and added an assist. Angela Mallis and Allie Bush recorded two goals apiece.
For the Pioneers, sophomore attack
Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) recorded a team-best three goals on eight shots, while senior midfielder
Ray Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) posted two goals and two assists. Sophomore midfielder
Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) scooped up a team-high four ground balls and finished with four draw control wins.
The Lyons got off to a quick start, scoring the game's first eight goals in the opening 15 minutes of play. Tewksbury netted three in that span, followed by Bush's two. Hamilton stopped the run for the Pioneers when she caught a speeding pass from Silveria with 10:50 on the clock. Wheaton would go on to score the next three goals to head into halftime with an 11-1 lead.
Hamilton netted her 24th goal of the season in the opening five minutes of the second period, but the Lyons quickly answered with a 3-0 spurt over the next five minutes.
Trailing 14-2, Smith's offense came alive, scoring the game's next four goals to cut the lead to 14-6. In that span, Silveria tallied two goals, while
Katie Christensen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and Hamilton added one each. That's as close as the Pioneers would come as Wheaton scored two more in the game's final 1:12.
In goal, Wheaton sophomore Molly Witten earned the victory in 33:49 minutes of play with a two save effort. Price shouldered the loss for the Pioneers, recording 12 stops.
The Lyons held a 35-16 edge in shots, also adding a 14-8 advantage on draw controls. Wheaton posted a 36-29 margin in ground balls as well.
Both teams return to action Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Smith hosts Emerson, while Wheaton takes on Coast Guard.
