Volleyball Drops NEWMAC Tilt to Babson, 3-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.— The Smith College volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Babson College Saturday afternoon at Staake Gymnasium in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. 
 
With its second consecutive win, Babson is now 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Smith drops to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.
 
Senior Lorraine Mackiewicz and sophomore Shannon Roseen each recorded seven kills, while first-year Elizabeth Cameron finished with 25 assists and six digs for the Beavers. Mackiewicz led all players with four block assists, while fellow senior Kristen Haislip had five kills and two service aces. Classmate Jenny Karnes added four kills, while sophomore Abby Beecher finished with a match-high 14 digs.
 
First-year Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) (Newark, N.J.) led the Pioneers with five kills. Sophomore Maca Rojas (Santiago, Chile/Liceo No. 1 Javiera Carrera) (Santiago, Chile) dished out 11 assists to go along with five digs, while senior Julie Voorhees (Ramona, Calif.) contributed a team-high 11 digs in the loss. 
 
The Green and White got out to a 12-1 lead in the opening set, and used 13 kills and three service aces in the second frame to build a commanding two-set lead. Babson jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third, but hit just .119 and were unable to put Smith away easily. The Pioneers got within three points on nine occasions, and cut their deficit to 22-20 late in the game before the Beavers used a kill by senior Alana Atchison and a pair of errors to end the match. 
 
Both teams return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as Babson visits Springfield, while Smith hosts Coast Guard.
