SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Springfield College women's tennis team battled past visiting Smith College, 5-4, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown at Appleton Courts on Tuesday.

Springfield improved to 5-3 overall, including 3-3 in NEWMAC play, as it rattled off its fifth-straight win for the second time in the past four seasons, the last coming during the 2013-2014 campaign. Smith slips to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in conference matches.Â
The Pride earned two of the three doubles points as it picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3. At the No. 2 spot, Janan Fugel (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) and Sam Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) claimed a doubles point over Rachel Litchfield and Nicole Piazza.Â
Needing just three points in singles play for the win, the Pride used a 6-0, 6-1 win by Etter at No. 4 and a 6-1, 6-0 triumph by Freadman at No. 5 to set the stage for Parrish. Â The sophomore would eventually clinch the win for Springfield with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 2.
The Pioneers claimed singles victories at the top spot as Peikes bested her opponent 6-2. 6-3. Classmates Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) and Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Academy for Information Technology) each picked up wins at the No. 3 and 6 spot, respectively.Â
Smith will be back in action Saturday when they head to face Emerson for an 11:00 a.m. conference meeting.
