Streak Comes to an End As Smith Falls at Springfield, 64-57

Smith's six-game win streak came to an end as Springfield College earned a 74-67 victory in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Thursday afternoon at Blake Arena. 

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) posted her sixth double-double of the season as the sophomore forward registered 12 points to go along with 13 rebounds and six blocks.
  • Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) had another productive game off the bench, finishing with 15 points in 25 minutes of play.
  • Junior forward Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) led the Pioneers with three assists.

SPRINGFIELD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior guard Molly McCausland notched a career-best 13 points to go along with four assists and two rebounds
  • Senior forward Ava Adamopoulos posted her second-straight double double, netting 12 points and picking up 14 rebounds.
  • Sophomore guard Chelsea McAllister also reached double figures, as she put in 10 points on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Springfield College jumped out to an early 8-2 lead over the Pioneers following three-pointers from Lexi Windwer and McCausland, before Adamopoulos extended the Pride's lead to eight on a lay-up with 5:20 to play in the quarter.
  • After entering the game midway through the stanza, Bondi pulled Smith to within three, but a last-second lay-up from McAllister gave the Pride a 19-14 lead at the end of one.
  • Smith evened the game at 21 points apiece on back-to-back baskets from Guest-Pritchett and senior guard Jade Chihara (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) just 2:41 into the second quarter, and would take a five-point lead on a lay-up from Chihara with 3:10 left in the half.
  • From there, Springfield College clawed back into the contest, and evened the score at 29 on a pair of free-throws from Alex Goslin with 21 seconds on the clock, sending the teams into the break tied at 29.
  • Even at 34 apiece with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter, a lay-up from Adamopoulos, followed by a pair of free-throws from McCausland gave the Pride a four-point lead, before two more baskets from Adamopoulos gave Springfield College a 42-37 lead at the end of three.
  • Windwer opened the fourth quarter with a triple just 14 seconds into the frame to push the Pride's lead to eight, before the senior cashed in on another opportunity to make it 51-40 with 6:01 to play.
  • The Pioneers would chip away at its deficit, and would pull to within five on a pair of free-throws from Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) (San Francisco, Calif.), but free-throws down the stretch sealed the seven-point win for the Pride.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
For the game, Smith shot 31.8 percent (21-of-66) from the field, 28.0 percent mark (7-of-25) from long distance, and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the charity stripe. Springfield shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the field and 50.0 percent from behind-the-arc while also holding the advantage on the boards, 49-38.
