The Smith College volleyball team came out on the losing end of their NEWMAC match against Coast Guard Tuesday evening. The Pioneers fall to 9-14 overall and remain winless in conference at 0-9. The Bears improve to 15-9 and 5-4.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Freshman Amy Hagen (Owings, Md./Northern) led Smith with six kills to go with eight digs.
- Sophomore Helena Wiatrowski (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) led the Pioneers with 10 digs and three aces.
- Sophomore setter Jody Huang (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) totaled 10 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
The Bears jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the opening set and after four straight points cut the lead to 10-7, Coast Guard ran off five straight with Martin registering a pair of aces for a 15-7 lead and cruised to the 25-15 win. Boyle led the way with four kills in the opening set.
SET 2
Smith held a 12-11 edge in the second set before the Bears scored 10 straight behind the serving of Boyle, who had three aces in the run, giving Coast Guard a 21-12 lead en route to a 25-14 win.
SET 3
The Pioneers got off to a fast start in the third set as they scored the first four points and led 10-6 before Coast Guard scored nine straight with Scott adding a trio of aces as the Bears took a 15-10 lead and won 25-16.
