The Smith College volleyball team was swept by Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday evening at Ainsworth Gymnasium. With the win, the Pride improve to an overall record of 11-4 and 3-3 in the NEWMAC, while the Pioneers fall to 7-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- First-year Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Tex./St. Dominic Savio Catholic) led the offensive effort with nine kills for the Pioneers.
- Sophomore setter Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) totaled 13 assists and a team-high five digs.
- First-year Amy Hagen (Owings, Md./Northern) and sophomore Charlotte Strine (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Friends) each finished with two blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
Trailing 12-7, the Pioneers scored three of the next four points to come within 13-10, but Springfield outscored Smith 12-3 down the stretch to claim the first set.
SET 2
The Pride jumped out to an 11-3 lead on three of their 17 service aces in the match. The margin grew as large as 13 points (23-10) before a kill from Johnson sparked a 3-0 run for the Pioneers. Springfield would then close the set out 25-13.
SET 3
The final set was tightly contested and featured five ties before a kill from Birdget Walsh began a 6-0 run for the visitors. Smith was able to come as close as 19-14 on a kill from
Elizabeth Peay (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial), but Springfield was too much and went on to close the match with a 25-18 set three victory.
