Basketball Takes Down Southern Maine, 72-64, in Opening Game of Tyler Tip-Off Tournament

Head coach Lynn Hersey won her 150th game at Smith College as the Pioneers opened the 25th Annual Tyler Tip-Off Tournament with a 72-64 win over Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at Ainsworth Gymnasium. The Pioneers improve to 2-0, while the Huskies drop to 0-2.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School) led all players with 21 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
  • Senior Amanda Barriscale (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) finished with 12 points, nine boards, and three assists.
  • Junior Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) totaled eight points, five rebounds, and four helpers.
  • Katy McClellan (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) and Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) each added nine points and four rebounds.

USM HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore Chantel Eells recorded a career-best 14 points on 5-8 shooting from the floor.
  • Freshman Kristen Curley also had a career-best scoring 13 points on a perfect 6-6 effort from the field, adding four rebounds and two steals off of the bench.
  • Juniors Alexa Srolovitz and Kimberly Howrigan each had 10 points.
  • Sophomore Jackie Luckhardt added eight points, three assists, and three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Guest-Pritchett opened with back-to-back buckets, giving the Pioneers an early 4-0 lead.
  • An 11-6 lead by the home team at the 4:16 mark of the first was quickly erased as Kimberly Howrigan drained a three-pointer and Srolovitz added a layup to tie the score at 11-11.
  • With the Huskies ahead 16-11, a three-point play from Holland and a jumper from Guest-Pritchett tied the game at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Pioneers outscored Southern Maine 21-9 in the second stanza to take a 37-25 lead into halftime, powered by eight points from Guest-Pritchett.
  • Smith's largest margin of the game was 16 points 59 seconds into the third quarter, however, Southern Maine closed out the period on an 11-6 run to make it 47-36.
  • After a trey from Srolovitz made it 66-58 in favor of the Pioneers with just under a minute to play, Smith made 6-of-8 free throws to close out the game.

  • The Pioneers out-rebounded Southern Maine 41-19.
  • Smith is now 2-0 against the Huskies.
  • The Pioneers open the season 2-0 for the second consecutive year.
