THE SERIES
The game marks the 67th meeting between the two programs, dating back to the first contest during the 1975 season - a 47-11 Smith victory. The Pioneers lead the series 39-27 and have won the last five meetings.
LAST MEETING
Three Smith College starters scored in double figures, led by a game-high 16 points from sophomore
Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga./The Lawrenceville School), as the visiting Pioneers earned a 73-55 win over Wellesley on January 18, 2017.
LAST WELLESLEY WIN
Sparked by hot second-half shooting, Wellesley downed Smith, 68-53, on December 7, 2013. Despite an aggressive Smith defense that forced 27 Wellesley turnovers, the Blue put the game out of reach in the second half by shooting an eye-popping 64% from the field, 67% from behind the arc.
SCOUTING THE BLUE
Wellesley (8-10, 4-8) enters tonight's game on a three-game losing streak after suffering an 83-69 defeat to Babson on Saturday. In that game, freshman Caitlin Aguirre led all scorers with a career-high 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with four rebounds and two assists. Aguirre leads Wellesley averaging 11.1 points per game while senior forward Ailis Hanley pulls down 4.9 rebounds per contest. The Blue offense averages 50.8 points per game and were picked to finish 10th in the NEWMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
The Smith College basketball program will host their annual Play4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness game tonight against Wellesley. The Pioneers look to get back in the win column after an 83-70 loss to MIT this past Saturday. In that game, Guest-Pritchett and sophomore forward
Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prepatory) finished with 23 and 22 points, respectively but Smith was outscored 20-8 in the fourth quarter. Guest-Pritchett ranks in the top-5 of the NEWMAC in points per game (14.8), rebounds per game (10.4), and field goal percentage (49.6) while Hanley (10.2 ppg) is currently fourth in conference shooting 51.3 percent from the field. Smith is the fourth-highest scoring team in the NEWMAC averaging 68.0 points per contest and was selected to finish fifth in the NEWMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
PLAY4KAY
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was created by the late North Carolina State University and Hall of Fame Coach Kay Yow. During her battle with cancer she became inspired to do more and believed that uniting players and coaches around the world to raise money by playing a simple game would aid in cancer research, honor survivors and serve the underserved. We stand by Coach Yow's famous quote "When life kicks you, let it kick you forward."
