The Smith College lacrosse team dropped their home opener to Western New England, 13-8, Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Smith Turf Field.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) totaled three goals and two assists in a losing effort to pace the Pioneers.
- Junior Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy ) netted two for Smith while Sydney Garner (Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School), Raleigh Williams (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley ), and Katie Christensen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) each tallied one.
- Junior midfielder Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) finished with five ground balls, four draw controls, and four forced turnovers.
WNE HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior Rachel Canning and freshman Lindsey Phillips powered the Golden Bear offense with four goals each, while freshman Shannen Barrett added two goals and one assist.
- Graduate midfielder Emma Norden registered three draw controls to go with four ground balls and six caused turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- WNE jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Barrett, Breen, and Phillips in the opening 10:27.
- Harris scored two for the Pioneers to come within two (4-2) with 10:35 left on the clock but a barrage of goals from the visitors gave WNE an 8-2 lead at the half.
- Early in the second half, Canning added two more to her game-high total of four goals before Smith would go on a 4-1 run for an 11-6 score. During the offensive spurt for the Pioneers, first years Sydney Garner (Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) and Raleigh Williams (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley ) recorded their first career goals.
- Both teams closed out the game scoring two goals apiece for the 13-8 final.
GAME NOTES
- WNE outshot the Pioneers by a 40-18 margin and held a 14-8 edge in draw controls.
- Smith goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) made 11 saves while Madison Cutler stopped nine shots for the Golden Bears.
