Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) scored three goals to power the Smith College lacrosse team to a 10-8 win over Ohio Wesleyan Monday afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers are off to their best start since the 2007 season when they also started 3-1.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy ), Sydney Garner (Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School), and Raleigh Williams (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley ) each scored twice for the Pioneers.
- Clelie Fielding (Francestown, N.H./High Mowing School) tallied a goal and two draw controls.Â
- Defensively, Katie Christensen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) finished the game with four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers took an early 3-0 lead as
Clelie Fielding (Francestown, N.H./High Mowing School) scored once and set up a pair of goals by
Sydney Garner (Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School).Â
Less than 30 seconds after Smith had gone up 3-0, the Bishops responded with a score from junior midfielder Cory Kinder, and freshman attacker Mickey Rice converted a free-position shot to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 3-2 midway through the half.
Goals by
Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy ) and
Raleigh Williams (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley ) helped the Pioneers to a 5-3 lead, but the Bishops came back with scores from freshman midfielder Sloane Baumgartner and Bowling to tie the game at 5-5 with 6:57 left in the first period.
Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) scored with 34 seconds left in the half to give the Pioneers the lead, then opened the second-half scoring with a goal 25 seconds into the period for a 7-5 Smith lead.
Baumgartner scored to bring the Bishops within 7-6, and after a Harris goal midway through the half, it was freshman midfielder Hope Poolos with a score to make it an 8-7 game.Â
Williams and Hamilton added scores in the final 5:08 to secure the win for the Pioneers.
GAME NOTES
- Smith held a 36-18 advantage in shots while Ohio Wesleyan claimed a 12-8 edge in draw controls.
- Smith goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) made eight saves in the win.
