Snyder Extends Career Home Run Record Against Salve Regina

LEESBURG, Fla. - Senior outfielder Ally Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) extended her own career home run record at Smith College in a 15-6 five inning loss to Salve Regina Monday evening. Earlier in the day, the Pioneers dropped a 3-2 decision to Becker College.

RECORDS
  • SMITH: 1-5
  • BECKER: 2-2
  • SALVE REGINA: 2-3

GAME 1: SMITH 2 BECKER 3
The Hawks broke through in the top of the fourth when senior first baseman Ashley Ciepiela crushed a two-RBI double to left field, driving in sophomore outfielder Vasia Murphy and sophomore catcher Megan Klemanchuck. In the bottom of the fourth after the Pioneers' senior outfielder Ally Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) tripled to right field, sophomore catcher Lydia DeAngelo (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown) drove her in on a sacrifice fly to pull Smith to within a run at 2-1.

The Pioneers tied it up in the bottom of the fifth when another sacrifice fly, this one by Brittney Blokker, scored freshman Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) who just beat the throw home. Two batters later, junior outfielder Jennifer Boxell made a diving catch in right field to save the go-ahead run for the third out, and the teams remained knotted at 2-2.

In the top of the seventh, Murphy lead off for the Hawks, and she took full advantage, launching the pitch over the wall in left center for her first home run of the season to put Becker ahead 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Lee retired the batters in order, putting out the last two with lineouts to the pitcher. Smith senior starting pitcher Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) pitched seven innings, striking out six.

GAME 2: SMITH 6 SALVE REGINA 15
The Pioneers got to the Salve pitcher early as a bases loaded walk from sophomore Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) scored first year Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais). Snyder then got to the plate and belted a grand slam to give the Pioneers a 5-0 lead. The home run was the 16th of her career to extend her own record.

Salve tacked on 11 runs in the fourth and fifth inning to seal the win for the Seahawks.

Smith will take the day off tomorrow and return to the diamond Wednesday with games against Washington University of St. Louis at 9:00 a.m. followed by Lasell at 11:30 a.m.
