Seventh Heaven: Lacrosse Wins Seventh Straight Game With 16-7 Victory Over Nichols

A dominant second half by the Pioneer offense helped the Smith lacrosse team top Nichols College, 13-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Vendetti Field. The Pioneers have won seven straight games and are off to their best start in program history at 7-1. 

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Reigning NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) registered a game-high six goals and added one assist and five ground balls.
  • First year Sydney Garner (Beaverton, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) totaled four goals, one assist and five draw controls. 
  • Sophomore Katie Christensen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) led the defensive effort with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. 
  • Junior goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) finished with nine saves for her seventh win of the year. 

NICHOLS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore Kirsten Sullivan led the Bison with three goals.
  • Senior midfielder Olivia Morawski tallied two while juniors Allison Bench and Melissa LaFleur each added one. 
  • Freshman netminder Emily Egan stopped 10 between the pipes for the Bison.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior Allison Bench opened the scoring at 27:05 of the first half with her fourth goal of the season but the Pioneers responded immediately with goals from Garner and Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy ). After two goals to end the period from Smith, the Pioneers would go into halftime leading 6-3.
 
Smith scored the first five goals of the second half to take an 11-3 lead – which they never looked back.

Smith will continue their four game road trip with a 7:00 p.m. meeting against SUNY Purchase on Friday, March 24.
