The Smith College softball team continued New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Friday afternoon where they fell to WPI in both games. After the Pioneers were bested, 4-0, to start the series, the Engineers took game two, 15-4, in a five-inning nightcap.

Smith Highlights
- Sophomores Emma Kraus (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield/Dupon-Kraus Homeschool) and Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and junior Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) each picked up hits for the Pioneers.
- Senior Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) earned the only walk and stole two bases.
- Senior pitcher Natalie Burchat (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) allowed four runs on seven hits with no walks.
WPI Highlights
- Seven different Engineers registered hits with Biney picking up two RBI.
- Freshman Mackenzie Phillips pitched a three hit shutout with six strikeouts and one walk.
How it Happened
It was an old-fashioned pitchers' duel until junior Ama Biney broke open a scoreless game with an RBI triple in the sixth inning. With runners on second and third, Renee LeCalire lofted a sacrifice fly to left followed by an RBI single from RiAnna May for two more runs and a 3-0 lead. Biney added a sac fly in the seventh inning for the 4-0 final.

Smith Highlights
- Blokker crushed a three run homer to center for her second dinger of the season.
- Senior Ally Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) finished with two hits and junior Stephanie Small (Whitman, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) earned her first hit of the season.
- First year Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) drove in Smith's first run of the game.
WPI Highlights
- Junior Kelsey Saucier allowed two hits and a walk to go with a pair of strikeouts in three innings. Senior Caroline Medino and junior Casey Arpin each took an inning.
- LeClaire went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
- May hit 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored while Biney batted 3-for-5 with a double.
How it Happened
The Engineers bats came alive as the offense exploded for 14 runs in the first two innings.
Snyder represented Smith's first run in the fourth inning as she crossed home on Konas' groundout.
Smith added three more runs in the fifth on Blokker's homer.
