The Smith College softball team recorded 31 hits and three home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Emerson College Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field. The Pioneers claimed game one 6-1 and went on to explode for a 16-5 victory in the nightcap.
GAME 1: SMITH 6 EMERSON 1
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- Smith crossed home four times to take the 4-0 lead over Emerson after the first two frames.Â
- Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) drove in the first Pioneers runs on a double into the left center gap to drive in Emma Kraus (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield/Dupon-Kraus Homeschool).Â
- A three-run second inning kicked off with back-to-back RBI doubles from Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) and Kraus before Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) capped off the frame with an RBI single.Â
- The Pioneers were able to plate a run in its half of the fifth and sixth frames to extend the lead to 6-0 over the Lions behind Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional)'s RBI grounder to second and single into left from Blokker.Â
- Cash took Burchat deep within the bottom half of the sixth as her second homer of the season landed over the fence in center to put the score at 6-1.Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERSÂ
- Â Emerson saw six batters record a hit, while Cash led going 1-for-3 at the plate with a homer.Â
- Marquez took the loss as she pitched the first two frames, giving up four runs on six hits with a walk.Â
- Freshman Marisa DeFranco was on the mound for the final five innings and gave up a pair of runs on five hits with one strikeout.
- Smith had five batters notch a pair of hits as Blokker finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Townsend recorded a pair of doubles, crossed for one run and drove in one.Â
- Burchat pitched a complete seven inning outing where she allowed a single run with six hits, two walks and fanned two batters.Â
GAME 2: SMITH 16 EMERSON 5
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- Kraus made her way home for the first Smith run on a miscue at third that was followed up by solo homer into left by Ally Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) to put the Pioneers up 2-0 to begin the first.
- Emerson answered in their half of the inning with a two-run bomb from sophomore Kallista Leonardos to knot the score, 2-all.Â
- Smith put themselves up by a pair at 4-2 in the top of the second frame after Lydia DeAngelo (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown) crushed a two-run home run into left center.Â
- Emerson trailed by seven runs after Smith's half of the third thanks to Pioneers tacking on five runs to extend its lead to 9-2.Â
- Snyder launched her second homer of the game into deep center to drive in the first trio of Smith runs followed by Townsend's RBI single to left.Â
- Kraus safely reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Townsend for the Pioneers final run of the inning.
- Smith plated five more runs in the fourth to balloon its lead margin to 14 at 16-2 that was highlighted by pinch hitter Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central)' two RBI triple into right field followed by Townsend's two run single to center.
- Megan McGrath (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) batted in the 15th Smith run on a bases loaded single before DeAngelo smacked in the final Pioneers run on an RBI single into left.Â
- Within the home half of the fifth, Emerson was able to answer with a trio of two-out runs to bring the score to 16-5.Â
- Leonardos reached throwing error committed by the third baseman that allowed Carney to plate the first run of the fifth.Â
- Cash batted in Leonardos for the second run on an RBI single before freshman Micaela Dix reached on a fielder's choice to bring Cash in.Â
- Smith reliever Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) got Emerson to ground out to second to wrap up the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERSÂ
- Dix went 2-for-3 at the plate for Emerson with one RBI, Cash brought in one run and Leonardos batted 1-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs.
- Cash started the opening pair of innings for Emerson and took the loss where she gave up six runs (four earned), surrendered five hits and walked on.Â
- DeFranco and freshman Erin Nolan completed the final two innings and allowed two runs to cross on six hits and struck out two.Â
- Snyder finished 2-for-3 in the box and went yard twice to finish with 4 RBI. With her two home runs, Snyder extends her own career record to 19 and is just one away from tying her record for homers in a season. Townsend batted 2-for-2 with three runs scored, three RBIs and drew one walk.
- Turner moved to 4-9 with the win and allowed Emerson two runs (one earned) on four hits to match her three strikeouts and one walk.Â
- Flohr was on the mound for the fifth inning and surrendered three runs on a pair of hits.Â

Smith will play their final non-conference game of the season Tuesday at Williams, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
