BABSON PARK, Mass. - Seniors Emily Bresnahan and Francesca Giovanucci combined for seven goals and four assists as Babson College defeated visiting Smith College 17-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday at MacDowell Field.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) scored two goals for the Pioneers.
  • Junior Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) totaled one goal, two ground balls, two draw controls and three caused turnovers.
  • The defensive effort was led by Katie Christensen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) who finished with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Junior goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) stopped 17 shots in goal.

BABSON HIGHLIGHTS
  • Bresnahan finished with five goals and two assists for seven points.
  • Giovanucci scored twice and added two assists for the Beavers.
  •  Senior Katie McKenna and junior Julia Harrigan both won four draw controls in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams were locked in a tight defensive battle before the Green and White created separation by outscoring Smith 8-1 over the final 10:25 of the first half. Gigi MacDonald (Newton, Mass./Newton North) got the first goal for the Pioneers. Bresnahan, who scored twice during the run, Giroux and Giovanucci all had two first-half goals as the Beavers' built a 10-3 edge at the break on first-year Taylor Herrmann's closing minute of the period.
 
Babson put the game away with four goals over the first eight minutes of the second half. Williams converted a feed from first-year Catherine Collins, Bresnahan scored a pair of goals two minutes apart, and then set up O'Halloran to make it 14-3 at the 22:12 mark.
 
First-year Olivia Remley scored her first career goal on a free-position shot with 7:46 left and junior Mallory Joyce notched her first tally of the year with 29 seconds remaining.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Beavers finished with an 18-4 advantage in draw controls and outshot the Pioneers 37-10.

Smith looks for their first NEWMAC win of the season Wednesday against Springfield at 6:00 p.m.
