Softball Sweeps Coast Guard on Senior Day

In her last home game as a Pioneer, Ally Snyder (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) went out on a high note as the senior blasted two home runs powering the Smith College softball team to a sweep of Coast Guard Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. Smith earned a 9-0 five inning win in the opener, and followed that with a come from behind 6-4 victory in game two. With the two home runs, Snyder extends her career home run record to 20 as well as the home run in a season record to nine.

GAME 1: SMITH 9 COAST GUARD 0

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior pitcher Natalie pitcher was outstanding in her final home game, dealing a three-hit shutout with three strikeouts and one walk.
  • Snyder finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBI and two runs.
  • Senior Ruth Zimmerman (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) and first year Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) each added two hits while sophomore Lydia DeAngelo (Portsmouth, R.I./Moses Brown) recorded three RBI.

COAST GUARD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kayla Sowers, Claire Hurley, and Francesca Farlow each laced a hit for the Bears.
  • Julia Ferris allowed seven runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Smith struck early and often, putting three runs on the board in the first innings. First year Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii)'s sacrifice fly scored Townsend which was followed by Snyder's single scoring senior Brittney Blokker (Seattle, Wash./Ballard). Snyder would come around the bases and score on Zimmerman's double to center.

Snyder went yard in the third and the Pioneers would talk on five more runs in the fourth inning for the 9-0 final.


GAME 2: SMITH 6 COAST GUARD 4

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • All nine Pioneers recorded hits led by sophomore Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional)'s 2-for-3 effort from the plate.
  • Junior Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) earned the win allowing four runs on five hits while also helping her cause in the batters box with two hits.

COAST GUARD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Emma Hvozdovich was 2-for-3 from the plate with a home run and two runs scored.
  • Sowers, Audrey Bartz and Sharayah Simco recorded hits in the loss.
  • Ferris allowed six runs on nine hits in four innings while Kylie Vavarek came in for two innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Snyder got the scoring started for the Pioneers, lacing her 20th career home run over the centerfield fence in the second innings. The Bears responded in the third as Sowers slid into home on a wild pitch and Hurley would score a run on a single from Bartz.

Smith exploded for a four run fourth inning to give themselves a comfortable 6-3 lead.

Hvozdovich's home run closed out the scoring as the Pioneers went on to win 6-4.

Smith closes out the season tomorrow when the Pioneers travel to Wheaton for a doublheader at 12:00 p.m.
