NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team held a 2-1 advantage going into singles play, but ultimately fell to the Pride of Regis College, 5-4 in a non-conference dual match on Wednesday afternoon.
DOUBLES
In the number one position,
Noa Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) made quick work of their opponents, winning their match 8-2. To give Smith the 2-1 lead going into singles,
Christine Yee (South San Francisco, Calif./South San Francisco) and
Leigh Johnston (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Punahou School) had to battle through a tough match in the number three slot. The pair went up 7-6 with two match points that Regis battled to save sending the set into a tie-break. In the tie-break, Yee and Johnston went up early and closed out the set 8-7.
SINGLES
In singles action, Dubin continued to be aggressive allowing her to cruise to an 8-2 victory. In the No, 2 position,
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) used her usual consistent style of play to go up early in her set. Her opponent tried to make a comeback late, but Smith continued to be patient and closed her out
8-4.
A series of close matches followed, making the contest go right down to the wire. The deciding match came in the No. 6 position.
Tess Ostoyich (Bethesda, Md./Whitman) went down 3-0, but battled back to make it 5-5. Ostoyich was looking to give the Pioneers a 5-4 victory, but her opponent made some excellent shots in the final moments of the match to give her, and Regis the match 5-4.
