Pioneers Victorious over Southern Vermont

The Smith College volleyball team got back in the win column with a 3-0 sweep of Southern Vermont College Thursday evening in non-conference action. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 6-5 while the Mountaineers remain winless at 0-11. Smith registered their second highest hitting percentage of the season of .329.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • First year Amy Hagen (Owings, Md./Northern) registered 13 kills, nine digs, and four aces to pace Smith in the win
  • Sophomores Jody Huang (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) and Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) both registered 14 assists.
  • Senior libero Sakura Tamaki (New York, N.Y./Fiorello H. LaGuardia) led the defensive effort with 22 digs.
  • First year Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Tex./St. Dominic Savio Catholic) totaled a match-high six aces to go along with eight kills.
  • The Pioneers remain undefeated at home with their 5-0 record in 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
After Southern Vermont opened scoring with a 4-3 lead, the Pioneers came alive and rattled off a 5-0 run punctuated by kills from Hagen and Johnson. Smith would stay in front for the entirety of the set and claimed a 1-0 match lead (25-10) on Hagen's powerful kill.
 
SET 2
Smith again wasted little time getting their offense rolling and found themselves up 8-1 forcing the Mountaineers to call a timeout. The Pioneers continued their high-powered offense to claim the second set 25-10.
 
SET 3
Smith quickly found themselves in a 5-1 hole early in the third set before a 5-1 run resulted in a 6-6 tie. The Pioneers took advantage of four service aces from Johnson, allowing the home squad to take an 18-8 lead as Smith would go on to close out the set 25-15.

UP NEXT
The Pioneers host a tri-match with NEWMAC foe Babson College and Framingham State University of the MASCAC. Matches are set to being at 12:00 p.m.
