Senior forward
Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) netted two goals to power the Smith College field hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Simmons College Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
On Smith's second corner of the game, Hamilton put the Pioneers on the board first with her second goal of the season just 11:04 into the game.
Hamilton then doubled Smith's lead at 19:12 on a feed from Alex Larossee.
The Williamstown native nearly completed the hat trick in the 40th minute but her shot was stopped right at the goal line by junior defender Adrianna Fournier.
Sophomore defender
Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown School) recorded her second career goal at the 58:04 mark as the Pioneers were successful on yet another corner opportunity.
Smith's final goal came off the stick of junior
Madeline Hubbard (Keene, N.H./Keene) and was assisted by
Morgan Handwerger (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley).
In the closing minutes of the game, Julie Saltamartini recorded her seventh goal of the season to prevent the Smith shutout.
Senior goalkeeper
Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made nine saves while Simmons goalie Lucy McNamara stopped eight for the Sharks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: SMI 1, SIM 0; 11:04 - Hamilton tipped in a direct shot from the top of the circle by junior midfielder
Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon).
GOAL: SMI 2, SIM 0; 19:12 - The Pioneers continued to pepper the Sharks defense as Hamilton took a pass from Larossee and sent it to the back of the cage for the 2-0 lead.
GOAL: SMI 3, SIM 0; 58:04 - Sophie Chase (Milton, Mass./Milton) inserted the ball to Pavlov who lifted a beautiful aerial from the top right side of the circle over the head of the Simmons goalie.
GOAL: SMI 4, SIM 0; 64:49 - Handwerger connected with Hubbard to give the Pioneers their highest scoring output of the season.
GOAL: SMI 4, SIM 1; 66:44 - Saltamartini and Sammy Rondeau were able to get past the Smith defense for a 2v1 advantage. Tietje made the initial save on Rondeau's shot but Saltamartini was there to put it in the back of the cage for the Sharks.
GAME NOTES
- Smith outshot the Sharks (17-14) while Simmons held a slim 8-6 advantage in corners.
- The Pioneers have won consecutive games for the first time this season.
- Tonight's four goals were the highest scoring output this season.
- The Pioneers now hold a 6-1 series advantage.
- Smith has outscored the Sharks 9-1 over the last three meetings.
- This was Hamilton's seventh multi-goal game of her career.
