Swimming and Diving Gives Strong Effort in 179-113 Loss to Springfield

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -  The Smith College swimming and diving team competed with strong performances against Springfield College on Tuesday evening at Dalton Pool, but ultimately fell to the Pride 179-113. In spite of the loss, the Pioneers earned wins in five events. 

RESULTS

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the opening 400-yard medley relay, the team of sophomores Katherine Anderson (Williamsburg, Mass./The Academy at Charlemont), Junko Taniguchi (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell), Paula Torre-Niteo and senior Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/English Language) started the meet with a third place time of 4:29.82.
  • Up next, sophomore Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) took home the 1000-yard freestyle crown with a time of 11:38.14, besting second place by nearly seven seconds.
  • Torre-Nieto also broke away from the pack to take first place in the 100-yard butterfly, achieving a lifetime best performance of 1:04.81.
  • Stoyanova took first place points in the 200 Individual Medley (2:26.08), third in the 100-yard breaststoke (1:17.00), and second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:43.51).
  • Other top individual performances include first-year Elisabeth Nesmith (Danville, Ky./Danville) placing second in the 100-yard freestyle (58.77) and third in the 50 free (27.16).
  • Sophomore Nell Tarno (Moretown, Vt./Harwood Union) posted a second place time of 1:08.75 in the 100-yard backstroke and first-year Tjasa Kmetec (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) touched the wall third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:12.48).

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS
  • First-year Hannah Chang (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) was the top performer in the 3-meter event (164.00) and third on 1-meter (160.90).
  • Senior Julianna Alvord (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional) took second the 1-meter (218.60) and sophomore Lauren Low (New Haven, Conn./Engineering & Science University Magnet) claimed second on the 3-meter (141.75)

UP NEXT
On Saturday, the Pioneers will race Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H., starting at 1:00 p.m.
