Newburgh, N.Y. – The Smith College lacrosse team improved to 3-0 with their 14-7 win over Mount Saint Mary College Wednesday evening.
SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) led the way for the Pioneers, finishing with two goals and three assists.???????
- Senior Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) potted three goals and finished with four points.
- Senor Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) totaled three points, seven draw controls, and five ground balls.
MSMC HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Christina Ryan tallied a season-high five goals.
- Senior Morgan Cordes led the Mount with five groundballs and joined Pedersen with a team-high three draw controls.
- Maggie Pederson dished out two assists and added four caused turnovers for the Knights to go along with three ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Smith raced out to a 6-0 lead over the first 15:53 of the contest, before the Knights rallied to outscore the Pioneers 5-3 over the final 13:25 of the first half to climb to within four goals at the intermission. Ryan scored four times in the first half on Wednesday with Courtney Condron scoring her second of the season in the final minute of the first half.
The visitors finished with a 26-11 advantage in shots over the opening 30 minutes and held the first half edge in ground balls 21-9 and draw controls 11-4.
The Knights managed just two second half goals, with Olivia Green scoring early in the frame and Ryan scoring her fifth with just over nine minutes left in regulation. The Mount never climbed closer than four goal halftime deficit and saw Smith take a game-high seven goal lead when Bella Ferraro scored with 5:54 left to give the visitors the final 14-7 advantage.
Moira Anderson (Rumford, R.I./Providence Country Day School) picked up the win for Smith with three stops.
Mount Saint Mary was outshot in the game 40-15 with Smith holding the edge in ground balls, 34-19, and draw controls, 16-7. The Knights finished the night 16-for-23 in clearing chances, while Smith went 19-for-22.
