Lacrosse Opens NEWMAC Play with 21-15 Loss to Coast Guard

In the conference opener for both teams, Smith College lacrosse dropped a 21-15 decision to Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon at Smith Turf Field. Smith drops to 3-1 on the season and 0-1 in the NEWMAC, while Coast Guard (6-1, 1-0) earns their first win over the Pioneers in program history.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • First-year Kaitlin Chiu posted a career-high five goals and added one assist.
  • Senior Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) recorded four goals and a game-high 14 draw controls.
  • Senior Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and sophomore Bella Ferraro each scored two for the Pioneers.
  • Senior goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) made 13 saves in the loss.

COAST GUARD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Freshman Brenna Farrington was unstoppable for the Bears, finishing with a career-high nine goals.
  • Classmate Marietta Davis scored four goals to go along with three ground balls and two draw controls.
  • Freshman Haley Howard totaled two goals, two assists, and 10 draw controls.
  • Rebecaa Dolan made six saves in the win and was replaced in the second half by Mary Budri who also recorded six stops.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Coast Guard got on the board 18 seconds into the game but Hamilton generated the equalizer less than a minute later. Both teams would go back and forth for the next four goals as junior Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass./Northampton) tied it 3-3 at the 21:19 mark. After an unassisted tally by Chiu with 20:54 remaining in the half, Brenna Farrington scored the next three goals for Coast Guard, giving the visitors a 6-4 advantage.

Mary Goins sparked a 5-2 run for Coast Guard which led 11-6 with 8:04 remaining in the half, but Smith would respond with four goals in the final 6:13 to cut the lead to 11-10 at the half.

Sophomore Bella Ferraro opened the scoring in the second period for the Pioneers and Myran's unassisted tally made the score 13-13 with 25:48 on the clock. The Bears would start to pull away, rattling off seven of the games next eight goals to hold a comfortable lead of 20-14 with 6:24 left in the game. Each team would add a goal in the final minute of action.
