CLERMONT, Fla. - The Smith College softball team earned a split on their final day of games in Florida on Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers earned a 5-2 win over University of Maine Farmington before suffering a 5-4 loss to Olivet College.
With the split, Smith moves to 2-8 overall.
GAME 1: SMITH 2 UMF 5
Kayleigh Obe struck first for the Beavers, knocking a home run over right field for the first run of the game. The Pioneers evened the score in the second inning when
Emma Kraus (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield/Dupon-Kraus Homeschool)' single scored
Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii). McGrath's first career home run gave Smith a 2-1 advantage in the fourth inning but Maine Farmington tied it up at 2-2. Three runs in the fifth for Smith proved to be enough as the Pioneers went on for the 5-2 win.
At the plate, sophomore
Megan McGrath (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) went 2-for-3 with two hits and two RBI.
Senior pitcher
Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) got the win, allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
GAME 2: SMITH 4 OLIVET 5
Leading 3-2 in the fifth, sophomore
Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) scored on a fielding error by the first baseman to put Smith up 4-2. Olivet answered back with a two run blast from Kinslea Blouin to even the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the seventh, Kayla Blett's single scored the winning run.
Junior
Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and Turner each collected two RBI in the loss, while McGrath hit 2-for-3 with a walk.Â
Junior pitcher
Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School)Â allowed five runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work.Â
