Softball Tops Elms in Home Opener, 7-5

Playing in their newly constructed softball complex, the Smith College PIoneers came from behind to defeat Elms College, 7-5, Monday afternoon in non-conference action. With the win, the Smith improves to 3-10, while the Blazers drop to 3-8.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior pitcher Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) tossed a complete game, allowing five runs on 11 hits with a season-high nine strikeouts.
  • Junior Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. 
  • Junior Emma Kraus (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield/Dupon-Kraus Homeschool), sophomore Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii), and first-year Rachael Newhall each collected two hits. 

ELMS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore Katelyn Silvia led the offensive effort with three hits and a run scored. 
  • Senior Elizabeth Olszewski went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. 
  • Junior pitcher Lisa Lusardi allowed seven runs on 12 hits in 5.0 innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blazers were quick to attack, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Smith responded in their half of the opening inning when sophomore Megan McGrath (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) doubled to right field, scoring junior Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional). Pioggia's double to left brought home McGrath and sophomore Elodie Townsend to tie the game at 3-3. 

A throwing error by the Blazer defense allowed Smith to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second.Olszewski's solo jack in the third once against tied the game. 

The Pioneers added what proved to be winning runs in the fifth inning on Newhall's RBI single and another error by Elms allowed two more runs to score. 

The Blazers would get a run back in the seventh, but Turner got out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh when she struck out freshman Kelsea Cristofora.
