NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team dropped game one but won game two in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers are now 4-13 overall and 1-5 in league play, while Clark is now 5-9 on the year with a 3-3 mark against conference opponents.
Game 1: Smith 2 Clark 7
- Senior Sami West earned the victory with a complete game, seven strikeout effort.
- Freshman Jessica Urella went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and two walks.
- The Cougars got on the board in the top of the second with an RBI from sophomore Sarah Woods that scored Christine Kopacz.
- In the top of the third, the Cougars added a run as Leah Bodin scored from third on Anjelica Gonzalez's groundout.
- Clark tacked on five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 7-0 game.
- After going scoreless through six innings, the Pioneers added a run when Melanie Regan's double to left scored Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School).
- With the bases loaded, all runners advanced as Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) was hit by the pitch.
- Konas led the effort with a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
- Senior pitcher Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) (3-8) gave up seven runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
Game 2: Smith 6 Clark 0
- Newhall led the Pioneers going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.
- Junior pitcher Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) earned her first win of the season, allowing three hits in the shutout.
- Smith took a 2-0 lead in the third on Newhall's single to right field scoring Melanie Regan and Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central).
- In the fifth, Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais), Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional), and Alyssia Pioggia each recorded RBI singles to build a 5-0 advantage.
- Townsend would come around to score on an error by the third baseman for the 6-0 final.
