Springfield Runs Past Lacrosse, 17-4

The Springfield College women's lacrosse team picked up its eighth win of the season on Wednesday evening, as the Pride defeated Smith College, 17-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Stagg Field.

With the win, Springfield College improves to 8-5 overall with a 3-1 record in the NEWMAC, while Smith is now 6-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) paced Smith with two goals on four shots.
  • Junior Chlow Harris added a goal and an assist, while Liz Lee also found the back of the net.
  • Senior goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) made eight saves in the loss.


SPRINGFIELD HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior attacker Kayla Schroeher led the Pride with six points on four goals and two assists.
  • Shelby Corsano added four points on three goals and an assist.
  • Defensively, Ann Mahoney caused a game-high four turnovers, while also scooping up three ground balls,


HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior midfielder Amanda Nusbaum scored the first two goals of the game to get the Pride going, before Kate Sarnacki converted a top-down feel from Corsano at the 12:20 mark to give the Pride a 3-0 lead. From there, Corsano sparked a five-goal run over 6:42, which consisted of back-to-back goals from Schroeher and Mahoney's first of the game to make it 8-0 with 4:11 on the clock. Smith's Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) found the back of the net with 2:50 to play in the first half, giving the Pride an 8-1 advantage at the break.

Schroeher and Sarnacki scored goals just 48 seconds apart to open the second half, pushing the Pride's lead to nine, before Hamilton scored her second of the game to make it 10-2, with 27:31 to play. From there, Springfield College went on a three-goal run, including tallies from Nusbaum, Kristen Steidler and Taylor Kane, before the hosts ended the game on a 4-0 run with goals from Schroeher, Steidler, Corsano and Bianca Dos Santos, who converted a free-position chance with 10:20 to play.

Springfield College dominated the action as it held a 38-17 advantage in shots, while also securing 17 draw controls compared to the Pioneers' four. Additionally, the maroon and white won the ground ball battle, 28-19, while the Pride also converted 4-of-6 free-position chances.

UP NEXT
The Pioneers host Emerson College Saturday, April 14 at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the game, Smith will honor its seniors.
