Softball Upended by MIT in NEWMAC Doubleheader

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team suffered two losses to MIT Friday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The visitors took game one 7-2 and completed the sweep with a 14-0 decision in the nightcap.

The Pioneers drop to 5-24 overall and 2-14 in league action, while the Engineers top the NEWMAC at 27-4-1 and 15-1.

GAME 1: SMITH 2 MIT 7
Senior Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) pitched a complete game, allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs, while also striking out six, but suffered her 14th loss of the season in Smith's first of two games against MIT. Offensively, the Pioneers were able to muster six hits as sophomores Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and Megan McGrath (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) drove in runs.

For the Engineers, sophomore Madi Pickett hit two home runs with four RBI and senior Amanda Lee went 2-for-3 with a dinger and three RBI.

Sophomore Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) led off the first with a double to left field before advancing to third on first-year Rachael Newhall's single to center. The Pioneers put a run on the board as Wagner scored on Konas' sac fly to deep left field.

In the second, sophomore Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) began the inning with a single to third and would double Smith's lead on McGrath's single to right field.

The Engineers struck for five runs in the third and would add another in the fifth and seventh for the 7-2 final.

GAME 2: SMITH 0 MIT 14 (5 INNINGS)
After taking a 2-0 lead in the first, MIT erupted for six more runs in the second inning before walking off in five innings as they overpowered the Pioneers in game two.

Junior Amber VanHemel limited Smith to just two hits, singles from Konas and junior Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow), to shutout the Pioneers. VanHemel struck out five and walked one batter in her fifth victory of the season.

Sophomore Sarah Von Ahn went 3-of-4 with four RBI as all student-athletes in the starting nine recorded hits for MIT.
