HOW IT HAPPENED:
Following four shots by the Engineers, including three that were turned away by Smith goalie Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), Biggs opened the scoring at the 26:49 mark. Exactly 26 seconds after winning the draw, junior Ana Flooks found McCormick for the equalizer. MIT continued to pressure the Pioneers, but a save by Price eventually led to Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) finding the back of the net.
After some back and forth play, McCormick evened the score at two on a free-position attempt with 23:40 on the clock, igniting the Engineers' pivotal 13-2 run. Senior Jack Simmons gave the hosts a 14-4 advantage on a free-position strike with 19 seconds remaining in the half.
MIT carried the momentum into the second stanza as it registered six unanswered goals, including three in a row by McCormick. Smith ended its scoring drought at the 12:53 mark when Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) forced a turnover, scooped up the groundball, and sprinted full field for her 47th goal of the year. Free-position shots by Flooks and McCormick increased the Engineers' lead while Biggs capped the scoring after connecting on a pass from Bryn Murray with 2:45 left to play.
