The Smith College lacrosse team fell to Springfield College, 14-4, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Quarterfinals game Wednesday evening at Stagg Field. The Pioneers conclude their season at 8-8, while the Pride win their eighth-straight game and advance to the NEWMAC Semifinals against MIT Saturday at Babson. Smith was making their first appearance in postseason since 2012.
Senior attacker Shelby Corsano registered four goals en route to breaking the Springfield College women's lacrosse program records for single-season points and single-season goals. Corsano pushed her season point total to 78, breaking head coach Kristen Mullady's previous record of 77, which she established in 1999. The senior also recorded her 57th goal of the 2018 season, breaking her own record of 56 which she set in 2016 during an NCAA Championship Tournament First Round matchup against Bridgewater State.Â
Along with Corsano, freshman Kate Sarnacki continued her outstanding play of late as she totaled five points on two goals and three assists, while Kristen Steidler added three goals of her own in the win. Corsano notched a team and game-high six draw controls, while freshman defender Abby Wylie had a game-high six ground balls. In net, Brenna Keefe made seven saves to earn her 13th win of the year.Â
Smith was led by three points from Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac), while Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson)Â was great between the pipes for the Pioneers, totaling 15 saves on 29 shots. Junior Katie Christensen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) led Smith with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Springfield College got the ball rolling quickly with three goals in the first 3:35 of the contest on goals from Corsano, Kayla Schroeher and Sarnacki, before Steidler buried a feed from Sarnacki with 17:11 on the clock to make it 4-0, Pride. From there, Allie Goddard would can an unassisted goal at the 12:45 mark, before Gabby Fodd buried a feed from Goddard with 10:36 to play, giving the maroon and white a six-goal lead. With four seconds to play in the first half, Sarnacki converted her second of the frame to send the Pride into the locker room with a 7-0 lead.Â
Smith scored the opening goal of the second half as Kaitlin Chiu converted a feed from Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac), before Corsano notched her second of the game with 28:03 to play. Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) would keep the Pioneers within six as the senior scored with 21:37 to play, but Springfield College started to pull away with a six-goal run to take a 14-2 advantage.
Junior Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass./Northampton) and Harris scored back-to-back unassisted goals for Smith in the last 5:20 of the game for the 14-4 final.
