NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team concluded their season with two losses to No. 25 Williams on Saturday afternoon. The Ephs took game one, 16-7, and completed the sweep with a 10-2 five-inning victory in game two. It was an offensive attack as the two teams combined for 53 hits and five homers. Prior to the game, Smith honored their four seniors:
Caroline Eyman (Franconia, N.H./Profile Senior),
Lindsey Lord (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown),
Stephanie Small (Whitman, Mass./Notre Dame Academy), and
Rowan Turner (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East).
With the sweep, the Ephs improve to 30-6 overall while the Pioneers end the year at 6-29.
GAME 1: SMITH 7 WILLIAMS 16
Pioggia was a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI while Lord finished 2-for-3 with three runs drove in. Sophomore
Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) added two hits and a run scored. For Williams, 10 different Ephs registered hits led by Brenna Martinez who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
After a homerun in the top of the first by Mackenzie Murphy, the Pioneers produced a three run first inning to take the lead. Wagner scored as sophomore
Elodie Townsend (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) reached on a fielders choice. followed by Pioggia's double, scoring Townsend and junior
Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional). Williams tied the game in the second inning and added two more runs in the third as Margo Beck drove in two runs with her single to center. The Pioneers got a run back as Pioggia hit a solo shot that just cleared the fence in center. A seven run seventh inning put the game out of reach at 16-4, but the Pioneers responded in their half of the frame. With runners on second and third, Lord smacked her first dinger of the season to deep center field, resulting in the 16-7 final.
GAME 2: SMITH 2 WILLIAMS 10
In the finale, six different Pioneers recorded hits as Feeney and junior
Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Uplands School) drove in runs. Lexi Hurt's two hits in the second game made her the all-time hits leader at Williams and five other Ephs recorded two hits in the win.
After a scoreless first inning, Williams produced three runs in the second. Smith got one back as Flohr's single scored Pioggia to make it a 3-1 game. The Ephs bats continued to stay hot as the visitors held a 10-1 lead in the fifth inning. After Rachael Newhall's double, Feene wrapped up the scoring as her double to left scored Newhall.
