Lacrosse Falls on the Road to Babson, 19-4

The Smith College lacrosse team shouldered a 19-4 loss to Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field. The Beavers, who won their third consecutive game, improve to 6-4 on the season and 3-0 in NEWMAC play, while smith drops to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) recorded a team-high two goals.
  • Classmate Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) added one goal and two assists.
  • Senior goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) made 12 saves for the Pioneers.

BABSON HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Lexi Lenaghan finished with seven goals and four assists for a career-high 11 points.
  • Senior Lyndsay and first-year Georgia Salvatore contributed three goals and two assist apiece.
  •  Junior Taylor Thorbahn recorded three assists, and first-year Isabelle Lent won a game-high five draw controls for the Beavers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Hamilton put Smith on the board first when she scored with 29:08 left on the clock. Giroux responded with a goal for the Beavers that sparked an eight-goal run. Lenaghan scored three straight goals and set up two more to make it 8-1 at the 17:15 mark. Harris ended Babson's run when she found the back of the net less than a minute later, but Lenaghan responded with three more goals and also set up scores by Salvatore and Giroux to extend the margin to 14-2 at halftime. 

First-year Cricket Fligor recorded two first-half saves to earn her third win of the year before being replaced by sophomore Olivia Phelan Olivia Phelan (Wilton, Conn.) at the break. Phelan stopped four shots over the final 30 minutes for the Beavers. 

Giroux and sophomore Olivia Remley got the second half started with back-to-back goals to extend Babson's lead to 16-3 with 28:22 left to play. After five scoreless minutes, Myran scored a free position goal for Smith, but the Beavers responded with three late tallies, including the first of first-year Sarah McCarthy's career with 7:48 remaining. 

Senior Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) (Hudson, Ohio) recorded 12 saves on the day for the Pioneers.


UP NEXT
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow when they travel to Western Connecticut State for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
