Senior midfielder Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) scored a career-high seven goals to propel the Smith College lacrosse team to a 16-9 non-conference win over Western Connecticut State Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 6-3 overall. The Colonials fall to 3-6 on the year.

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Myran added one assist and recorded a team-high six draw controls and four caused turnovers.
  • Junior attacker Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) chipped in with five scoring strikes and a helper.
  • Senior goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) finished with 10 saves for the Pioneers.

WESTCONN HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior midfielder Lauren Bradshaw tallied team-highs of four goals and three assists.
  • Sophomore attacker Brooke Baldelli added a hat trick, four ground balls, and two draw controls.
  • Rookie goalkeeper Jennifer Sawicki stopped eight shots for the Colonials.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonials drew first blood less than a minute into the contest when Baldelli netted her team-leading 32nd goal of the year. However, Smith countered with a 6-0 run thanks to three goals by Harris and two from Myran. The hosts battled back to slice the gap to 6-3 when Bradshaw tickled the twine with 15:26 left in the first half.

That was as close as the Colonials would get as the Pioneers led 9-4 at the break before extending the margin to 12-4 early in the second.

Shots, groundballs and turnovers were nearly even for both teams. However, Smith converted on 7-of-9 free position attempts, while WestConn hit for 5-of-12. The Pioneers also held a commanding edge in draw controls, 17-10.

UP NEXT
The Pioneers return to conference play Wednesday evening at Springfield at 7:30 p.m.
