Volleyball Sweeps Bay Path for First Win of Season

LONGMEADOW, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team bounced back to notch its first win of the season Tuesday night with a sweep over Bay Path University, 26-24, 25-15, 25-14. The Pioneers improve to 1-5 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 2-3.

NOTABLES
  • Sophomores Amy Hagen (Owings, Md./Northern) and Claire Cicchetti (Menlo Park, Calif./Woodside) each finished with 13 kills.
  • Cicchetti topped her team with a stellar .345 attack percentage.
  • First year Anna Lynch (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) produced 16 digs and one service ace.
  • Senior Helena Wiatrowski (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and junior Jody Huang (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) combined for 28 assists.
  • Smith posted five more (8-3) total team blocks than Bay Path and delivered their best hitting percentage (.245) of the season.
  • The Pioneers improve to 2-0 all-time against the Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
- Bay Path jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead to begin the match on a a service ace from Jessica Warren. An attack error by the Wildcats gave Smith their first lead at 11-10 after a 9-2 run. It remained close until back-to-back kills by sophomore Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Tex./St. Dominic Savio Catholic) and Hagen secured the 26-24 set one victory.

SET 2 - After a back and forth start to the set, the Pioneers pulled away on a service ace from Lynch to make it 16-7. Sloppy offense from the Wildcats allowed the Smith to earn the final three points to finish off the set 25-15 and a 2-0 lead in the game.

SET 3 - Cicchetti hammered down six kills in the final set, including the final point to win the set 25-14 and match 3-0.

The Pioneers return to Ainsworth and will host Rhode Island College Thursday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m.
