Volleyball Splits Tri-Match With UMass Dartmouth, Southern Maine

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team split a tri-match with host UMass Dartmouth and Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at Foley Gymnasium, as the Pioneers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Huskies before notching a 3-1 triumph over the host Corsairs.

Match 1 vs Southern Maine
Junior Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Texas/St. Dominic Savio Catholic) registered 14 kills in the middle match setback for Smith, which received nine kills each and a combined eight digs from junior Claire Cicchetti (Menlo Park, Calif./Woodside) and first-year Ava Zollinger (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep).  First-year Gabby Beckman (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) added eight kills and 17 digs for the Pioneers, who received seven kills, 14 digs and four service aces from junior Amy Hagen (Owings, Md./Northern).  First-year Evi Evgeniou (Thessaloniki, Greece/Pinewood International) collected 41 set assists, 11 digs and a trio of service aces for Smith, which received 21 digs from senior Jody Huang (Cranston, R.I./Cranston).

Match 2 vs UMass Dartmouth
Johnson notched 11 kills in the nightcap triumph for Smith, which dropped the opening set 25-23 before rallying to take the next three by finals of 27-25, 25-23 and 25-19.  Cicchetti added 11 kills and four service aces for the Pioneers, who received 10 kills and two service aces from Zollinger along with seven kills and 19 digs from Beckman.  Evgeniou registered 38 set assists and eight digs for Smith, which received 29 digs from Huang.
