Clermont, Fla. - The Smith College softball team suffered an 8-2 loss to Franklin & Marshall before pulling out a 9-7 victory over Becker on Monday afternoon at the PFX Spring Games. With the split, the Pioneers move to 2-2 on the season.
GAME 1: F&M 8, SMITH 2
- The Diplomats put the pressure on early as they loaded the bases with no outs in the first. Lexi Piccinich delivered the sac fly to send Jamie Belfer home. Sam Martin crossed home plate on a passed ball and Abi Buell tallied an RBI to make it 3-0 at the end of the first.
- The Pioneers responded in the second as Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow/East Longmeadow)Â scored on a sacrifice fly from Megan McGrath (Wayne, Pa./Radnor).
- Franklin & Marshall exploded for four runs in the third inning as they took a 7-1 lead into the fourth.
- Claire Lord (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) recorded her first collegiate hit for the Pioneers, bringing home Pioggia to make it a 7-2 game.
- The Diplomats tacked on one more run in the fourth for the 8-2 final.
- Emma Gardecki (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough)Â took the loss for the Pioneers, allowing seven runs on six hits in three innings of work.
- Pioggia and Lucy Grant (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) each collected two hits for Smith.
GAME 2: SMITH 9, BECKER 7
- Emily Iacovelli led off the first with a dinger to left field to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead after one.
- In the third, Smith tied the game on Makena Wagner's (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) RBI double to left field, scoring Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central). With the bases loaded, Grant's groundout to second allowed Wagner to score. DeAngleo then belted her first homerun of the year to extend the lead to 5-1.
- Leading 7-4 in the fifth, Eryn Lee (Saratoga, Fla./Saratoga) cracked her first collegiate homer to center followed by a sac fly from Konas to make it 9-4 in favor of the Pioneers.
- Becker made things interesting late in the game as a homerun in the sixth and a two RBI single in the seventh allowed them to come within two, 9-7.
- With the bases loaded and two outs, Smith was able to induce a popup to second to end the game.
- Flohr earned her first win of the year, giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings.
- Wagner, Pioggia, Flohr, and Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional)Â registered two hits apiece.

Smith continues their spring break schedule on Tuesday with games against University of Northwestern (Minnesota) (11:15 a.m.) and University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (1:30 p.m.).
