Lacrosse Stifled by Wellesley, 15-7

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College lacrosse team fell to Wellesley College, 15-7, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tilt Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 7-2 on the year and 1-1 in conference action, while the Blue are 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC. 

SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Emily Biggs (Florence, Mass./Northampton) recorded four goals, six ground balls, and five draw controls.
  • Kaitlin Chiu (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), Maddie Ryan (Scituate, Mass./Scituate), and Clelie Fielding (Francestown, N.H./High Mowing) rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers.
  • Goalkeeper Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) made 10 saves in the setback.

WELLESLEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Eleanor Mallett led all players with six goals.
  • The NEWMAC's leading scorer, Dacia Persky, finished with five tallies.
  • In net, Lorna Li totaled 15 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wellesley struck first at the 29:13 mark on a free position goal from Mallett which sparked a 2-0 run from the Blue. Trailing 3-0, Ryan netted the first goal for Smith with 23:17 remaining in the first half. Back-to-back goals from Wellesley put the visitors ahead 5-1 before Biggs found the back of the net to make it a 5-2 game. A goal from Persky with just over a minute in the half gave the Blue an 8-3 halftime lead.

Wellesley opened the second half with two goals to push the lead to 10-3 before Biggs and Fielding added markers for the Pioneers. With under 20 minutes left in the game, Wellesley outscored Smith 5-2 for the 15-7 final.

GAME NOTES
  • Smith drops to 11-44 all-time against the Blue.
  • Wellesley held a 31-28 advantage in shots and 13-11 edge in draw controls.
  • The Pioneers won the ground ball battle 27-25.

UP NEXT
Smith will host Framingham State University on Wednesday in a non-conference match set for 6:00 p.m.
