No. 13 MIT Takes Two from Smith Softball

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The No. 13 ranked MIT softball team swept Smith College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader in Cambridge on Friday evening. Doing so, the Engineers clinched a top-two seed in the upcoming conference tournament and the results of their upcoming doubleheader against WPI will determine the 2019 regular season champion. MIT came into today's doubleheader ranked third in the first NCAA Division III New England Regional Rankings.

Game 1: No. 13 MIT 12, Smith College 0 (Five Innings)
  • MIT scored in all four of the its offensive innings and used a combined shutout pitching performance by Ravenne Nasser and Amber VanHemel.
  • Devon Goetz began the first with a double to left and scored on an RBI single by Anya Chase. The Engineers also got an RBI double by Sarah Von Ahn, an RBI single by Madi Pickett and took advantage of a Smith error to take the 4-0 advantage.
  • The Engineers added four more in the second thanks to an RBI triple by Goetz, an RBI single by Michelle Wist, an RBI single by Kassidy Peterson and an error by the Pioneers.
  • After Von Ahn made the score 9-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly, Pickett tallied an inside the park home run in the fourth and Erika Anderson plated two of her own on a single to left to account for the 12-0 final. 
  • Nasser scattered two hits and struck out five to improve to 11-4 this spring, while Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Upland School) (5-9) took the loss as she allowed eight runs on nine hits over two innings for the Pioneers.

Game 2: No. 13 MIT 9, Smith College 1 (Six Innings)
  • MIT secured the sweep in game two by scoring two runs in the first, two in the second, two in the third and three in the sixth as the Engineers topped the Pioneers 9-1 in the nightcap.
  • Goetz came across with MIT's first run after an error before Pickett made it 2-0 with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the opening inning. The Engineers doubled their lead to 4-0 in the second with an RBI single by Goetz and an RBI groundout to the left side by Chase.
  • After Smith got one back in the third, a wild pitch with runners on second and third made the score 5-1 and Von Ahn's RBI single up the middle made it 6-1.
  • The Engineers plated single runs on an error and a wild pitch before Wist ended the game with a base knock through the left side for the 9-1 victory and two game sweep.
  • Colleen Campbell picked up the win (10-2) with her six inning performance in the circle for the Engineers, while Emma Gardecki (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) took the loss (0-7) for Smith as she allowed six runs and nine hits over five frames.


UP NEXT
Tomorrow's scheduled doubleheader against Springfield has been postponed and will be played Monday at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
