Softball Wraps Up NEWMAC Slate with Losses to Springfield

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team honored their five outgoing seniors prior to their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against Springfield College Tuesday afternoon. The Pride cruised to a 13-0 win in the opener followed by an 8-1 victory in game two. Springfield College improved to 20-14 with the win, with an 11-7 record against league opponents, while Smith falls to 7-25-1 overall and 1-17 in NEWMAC play.

GAME 1: SMITH 0 SPRINGFIELD 13 (5 INNINGS)
  • Springfield College opened the game with four runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Meghan Sastram and Shelby Allen's three-run homer.
  • The Pride would add three more in the second and two more in the third to go ahead 9-0.
  • In the fourth, the visitors continued their hot hitting and put four more runs on the board for the 13-0 final. 
  • Tyler Feeney (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and Lucy Grant (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) recorded the only hits for Smith in the opener. 
  • Jess Flohr (5-10) allowed seven runs on 10 hits in two innings of work.

GAME 2: SMITH 1 SPRINGFIELD 8
  • The Pride's bats caught fire as they took a 2-0 lead after the opening inning.
  • Alexyss Conley smacked a solo home run to left field in the top of the second, giving Springfield a 3-0 lead. 
  • The Pioneers scored their only run of the afternoon when Stephanie Konas (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) crossed home plate on Makena Wagner's (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) groundout to the shortstop. 
  • Springfield would hit three more deep balls en route to the 8-1 victory.
  • Eryn Lee (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) went 2-for-4 at the plate for Smith, while Wagner recorded her 97th career hit.
  • Emma Gardecki (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) (0-8) gave up seven runs on 12 hits in 4.1 innings.

UP NEXT
Smith will play its final games of the 2019 season tomorrow at Williams. Game times are set for 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
