Volleyball Falls to MIT and Framingham State in Tri-Match

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- The Smith College volleyball team dropped a pair of decisions to MIT and Framingham State at Rockwell Cage on the campus of MIT on Saturday afternoon. 

Scores:
MIT 3, Smith College 0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-11)
Framingham State 3, Smith 2 (17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11)

Records: MIT (12-2, 2-0 NEWMAC); Smith (3-7, 0-1 NEWMAC); Framingham State (6-6)
 

MATCH ONE vs. MIT:

Set 1: MIT won six out of the first seven points but Smith battled back, tying the score at eight courtesy of Claire Cicchetti's (Menlo Park, Calif./Woodside) ace. A serving miscue by the Pioneers sparked a 17-4 run which was capped by a kill from junior Emily Condon.

Set 2: Smith held a 4-1 edge after a kill from Evi Evgeniou (Thessaloniki, Greece/Pinewood International). A kill by senior Alexis Groark kicked off a five-point burst which put the Engineers ahead for good and helped them capture a 25-11 win.

Set 3: MIT raced out to a 7-1 advantage and never looked back as Groark's kill secured another 25-11 victory.

Stars of the Match
1. Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) and Caleigh Johnson (Georgetown, Texas/St. Dominic Savio Catholic) each finished with four kills
2. Evgeniou added 13 assists
3. Senior Jody Huang (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) led the defensive effort with nine digs

MATCH TWO vs Framingham State:

Stars of the Match

1. First year Ava Zollinger (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) recorded a career-high 20 kills, hitting .552 to go along with four service aces
2. Classmate Evi Evgeniou (Thessaloniki, Greece/Pinewood International) totaled a career-best 47 assists

Smith will travel to WPI for a NEWMAC match on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m.
