Lacrosse Defeats Curry, 16-6

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - An 8-0 run to open the second half helped the Smith College lacrosse team capture a 16-6 victory over Curry College on Saturday afternoon. Junior Bryn Murray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) tallied a career-high five goals, two assists, five ground balls, five draw controls and two caused turnovers for the Pioneers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Smith jumped out to a 6-0  advantage over the first 20 minutes of the game. Curry got on the board at the 9:28 mark on an unassisted tally from Sharon Doherty, but the Pioneers responded with back-to-back goals from Lee and Murray. Leona Stevens made the score 8-2 in favor of the Pioneers going into the break.

Smith's offensive firepower carried over to the second half as the Pioneers rattled off eight goals to start the second half, taking a 16-2 lead with 8:09 remaining in the half. The Colonels would go on to score four more time down the stretch for the 16-6 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Juniors Shannon McGinnis (Levittown, Pa./The George School) and Liz Lee (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) each finished with three goals and one assists
  • Goalkeeper Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) registered five saves in her first win of the season
  • Defensively, senior Bella Ferraro (Orange, Conn./Amity) and McGinnish led the way with three caused turnovers apiece.
  • Smith held a 13-10 edge in draw controls and 22-10 advantage in ground balls.

Smith will travel to Western New England University on Wednesday, March 4 for a 4:00 p.m. start.
