SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - In their first road game of the season, the Smith College lacrosse team fell to Western New England University, 20-7, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Reilly Miller opened the scoring for the Golden Bears just 15 seconds into the game. Senior Mercedes Woolley (Waitsfield, Vt./Harwood Union) answered for the Pioneers just a couple minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. Western New England scored seven of the next eight goals over a 14 minute stretch to go up 8-2. Both teams scored three goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half, giving the Golden Bears an 11-5 lead going into halftime.Â
Western New England came out strong yet again to begin the second half, scoring within the first 30 seconds, and scoring four within the first five minutes to go up 15-5. The Golden Bears kept the pressure going, as they would go on to score another five goals over the course of the remainder of the game.Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Junior Kaitlin Chiu (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), senior Mercedes Woolley (Waitsfield, Vt./Harwood Union), and senior Bella Ferraro (Orange, Conn./Amity) each scored two goals for the Pioneers.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Schams (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon)Â made eight stops in the setback.
- Western New England held a 35-22 shooting advantage.
