NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -
Ally Yamada's (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) layup with 28 seconds on the clock secured the victory for the Smith College basketball team over Williams College Tuesday evening in Ainsworth Gymnasium.
Smith moves to 7-1 on the year, while the Ephs drop 4-5.
Top Performers
- Yamada was the leading scorer for the Pioneers, finishing with 17 points on 6-9 shooting
- Elle Jo Whalen (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) registered her first double-double of the year with 12 points and a game-high 12 boards
- Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) added 14 points, while Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) chipped in 13 with six assists
Game Highlights
- Smith led by as many as five in the first quarter and would finish the quarter ahead 17-16
- Both teams exchanged baskets with under 20 seconds in the half as the Pioneers would go into the break leading 31-28
- A three-pointer by Yamada pushed Smith's advantage to 52-42 with 44 seconds left in the third and the Pioneers held a 52-44 edge at the end of the period
- Williams would chip away and strung together a 7-0 run midway through the quarter to make it a one point game, 57-56, at the 3:15 mark
- Clutch shooting down the stretch by Yamada and Whalen secured the victory for the Pioneers
