NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College volleyball team was able to pick up a set victory, but the Pioneers eventually fell to Coast Guard, 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16) Tuesday night in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Olivia Smith (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) led Smith with 10 kills while Abby Sweeney (Spring, Tex./Klein) finished with eight kills
- Katie Abbruzzese (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton Harmon) finished with eight digs and Nathalie Pak (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) added a team-high 17 assists
- For the match, the Pioneers hit .126, including a .300Â hitting percentage in the second set
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For Coast Guard would score nine straight behind the serving of Carmen Zipf to take a commanding 14-3 lead in the opening set. The Pioneers would use a 6-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 17-10. The Bears would go one to score three-straight for a 20-10 lead and win the opener 25-14.
- The Bears had a 10-6 lead in the second set and increased it to 16-11 and maintained that lead before back-to-back points cut the margin to 20-18. CGA led 23-21 and closed out the set 25-22.
- 25-14.Smith led for most of the third set before Coast Guard scored four-straight to pull even at 17-17. The Pioneers scored six of the next eight for a 23-19 lead and won 25-22.
- 25-14.The Bears took control of the match using a 6-1 run in the fourth to open up a 15-9 lead and would go on to finish with the 25-16 victory.
